Bryan Ward’s property, Illawong, comprises 160 hectares and carries up to 140 beef cattle at any one time. While this is a relatively small property, it is perhaps typical of thousands of farms producing beef in Australia. Bryan’s achievements over 24 years of managing Illawong provide valuable lessons for producers seeking to maintain production while also regenerating and improving the condition of the land. Watch a 1-minute summary of Bryan's key practices and achievements.

Maddy Coleman grew up in the city, and her love of horses introduced her to agriculture. Years of experience working in diverse farming practice and ongoing training and education followed. Maddy has made changes to their initial Rothesay business model, proving that flexibility, formal and applied education and conversations with mentors are key factors in managing ongoing drought conditions.

Management changes on Rothesay include preserving ground cover using a different stocking model and fencing to allow rehabilitation of creeks and gullies. Maddy shares her experience in managing Rothesay using regenerative farming practices in this transition case study.

On his cane farm in northern NSW, Robert Quirk has developed and implemented a set of regenerative practices that are recognised as best management for cane farming.

Robert uses a holistic approach, combining engineering and agronomic solutions, to drainage, soil health and nutrient management.

He's resolved waterlogging and minimised exposure of acid sulphate soils.
He's activated soil life, increased cane yields and reduced external inputs.

Watch this quick snapshot of Robert's innovations and achievements.

"Students’ knowledge needs to be across the many ways to practise agriculture. These range from organic and regenerative agricultural practices, focused on replicating natural processes, through to technology-driven precision farming and the emerging trend of using locally sourced inputs in circular farming systems."

Pasture cropping is an important innovation at Colin Seis’s property Winona. Colin Seis’s implemented pasture cropping allows abundant and continuous groundcover to protect the soils on Winona. Soils on Winona are naturally fragile low fertility soils, however samples of his topsoil for microbial biomass showed that microbes are abundant and balanced under his management.

Colin Seis’ property Winona was one of the original case studies in regenerative agriculture conducted in 2012. Colin is an innovative manager, cropping for resilience using pasture cropping and multi-species pasture. The multi-species mix includes Tillage Radish (Raphanus sativus var. longipinnatus), also known as Daikon Radish, Forage Radish or Oilseed Radish, which is characterised by fast-growing leaves and a long tap root. Tap root systems can penetrate denser soil layers, including compacted layers such hardpans, thus improving soil structure and aeration. This image also shows the clover (present before the crop was planted) and the barley stalks.

"Conservation and revegetation programs can have many benefits for landholders. Not only do they have ecological benefits, they can play an important role in a landholder's wellbeing and even lead to improved production outcomes. Our Illawong case study is a fantastic example, with 30% of Bryan's property fenced off for revegetation.

Bryan has a mosaic pattern of woody vegetation, using a direct seeding method to revegetate the rocky ridges with a range of species. These patches protect livestock from wind, rain and heat as well as stabilise the soil. An extra benefit Bryan has found is a resurgence in native fauna: ‘When I came here, you couldn’t find goannas, echidnas, … plus all the little birds … they have come back!’. Without vegetation, life would be impossible. Vegetation plays a critical role in supporting life on the planet by providing habitat and food, producing oxygen and absorbing carbon dioxide. It is with deep sadness that we share the news that Soils For Life founder and patron Major General the Honourable Michael Jeffery passed away peacefully at home this morning.

Born in Wiluna in Western Australia, General Jeffery’s distinguished military career included operational service in Malaya, Borneo, Papua New Guinea and Vietnam, where he was awarded the Military Cross and the South Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry. He served as Governor of Western Australia from 1993 to 2000 and as Australia’s Governor General between 2003 and 2008.

However, it was his work as Australia’s National Soils Advocate that made him so well known and loved within our community. In that role, General Jeffery was pivotal in alerting Australians to the generally poor quality of our soils and working to encourage everyone to focus on their regeneration.

General Jeffery founded Soils For Life in 2013. His vision – to encourage all Australians to focus on soil health and the urgent need to regenerate our rural landscapes – still underpins our work.

His ability to connect with Australians across the country around his passion for agriculture and the healthy landscape it depends on was undiminished until the very end.

Funeral arrangements are to be advised. Further enquiries can be made with the Office of the Major General.
