What is Soils for Life?

Soils for Life is an independent, not-for-profit charity dedicated to supporting Australian farmers and rural communities in regenerating soils and landscapes. We envision a future of healthy, regenerated soils and landscapes; nutritious and abundant food; productive and profitable food and fibre systems; and resilient and connected communities.

We support a growing movement of farmers and rural leaders dedicated to farming in ways that improve soil and bring life back to the land. Farmers are changing the world and together we’re helping Australia meet challenges such as climate change, biodiversity loss and food scarcity.

Our objectives are to respect farmers as land stewards and support them to bring their soils back to life; build farmer networks, peer support and learning opportunities; help farmers, scientists and decision makers find common ground on the benefits of regenerating soils and landscapes; and ensure the opportunities and challenges of regenerative agriculture are widely understood.

Soil’s critical role

Healthy and productive soils matter. Soil is one of the earth’s most important natural resources and is essential for healthy plant growth, food production and ecosystem services such as clean, plentiful water and air. Our soils help regulate the earth’s climate and they store more carbon than all the world’s forests combined, making soil regeneration fundamental in efforts to combat climate change and increasing extremes of weather.

The Problem
Yet Australian soils are degraded and are continuing to degrade through erosion and loss of soil function. This threatens not just farm productivity and profitability, but also our nation’s food security, access to water and ecological health.

Solutions
Our solution is to support a growing movement of farmers and rural leaders dedicated to farming in ways that improve soil and bring life back to the land. Farmers are changing the world. And together we’re helping Australia meet global challenges such as climate change, biodiversity loss and food scarcity.

Support Farmers

We believe that by enabling and empowering farmers to rebuild and restore soils, Australia can mitigate and adapt to climate change and other challenges, while producing healthy, plentiful food and fibre in ways that are good for farmers, consumers and the planet.

Sharing Knowledge – We do this by sharing knowledge to inform and enable soil and landscape regeneration. We connect farmers with the research they need to improve their soils and landscapes and to understand the economic, social and environmental benefits this presents. We have created the most extensive body of case studies on regenerative farming in Australia, providing solid, credible evidence of the economic and sustainable benefits of regenerative agriculture. We also ensure the opportunities and challenges of regenerative agriculture are widely shared and understood.

Building Farmer Networks – We also do this by building farmer networks. This creates peer support and learning opportunities to enable the sharing of benefits and practices of improved soil health.

Encourage Collaboration
We help farmers, scientists and decision makers find common ground on regenerating soils and landscapes. We have contributed further, by nurturing the constructive relationships to influence policy and contribute to research that will drive systemic change.

About our case studies

For more than a decade, Soils for Life has been producing case studies of farmers’ inspiring stories of transition to regenerating their soils and landscapes. It is the largest body of regenerative farming case studies in Australia.

Each Soils for Life case study is an interwoven story supported by evidence of how land management innovators are achieving resilient, productive outcomes through regenerative landscape management practices. Our case studies are holistic, documenting ecological, social and economic factors and change. The case study program promotes understanding on the part of land managers, policy makers, researchers and consumers, of the underlying issues and benefits of landscape regeneration. We have a strong focus on peer-to-peer support in order to enable improvements in landscape and water management practices across Australia.

The case studies have been used by farmers, researchers and policy makers around the country to inspire and inform new ideas and approaches in agriculture.
