A thriving mixed-farming enterprise on the outskirts of Young, NSW, Milgadara is currently home to three generations of the Daly family as well as prime lamb, cattle and a host of soil micro-organisms. After a major health scare following a history of chemical farming, Rhonda and Bill’s mindset shifted and they began to focus on healing both their soils and themselves, producing healthy food and fibre and helping thousands of others in the process.

🌱Our September Farmer in Focus was Jamie Wright. 🌱

After seeing the emergence of herbicide-resistant weeds, 'Springfield' mixed farmer Jamie Wright, took a long, hard look at his approach to weed control and herbicide use. After a period of research and experimentation, he made a range of management changes including the adoption of chaff carts, application of molasses, and use of cover crops. The results have been significant. The changes have improved soil health, reduced the weed seed bank and reduced overall pest pressure, leading to a halving of fertiliser use and reductions in pesticides.

“It can be very isolating being a regenerative farmer because it is a big shift in culture as well as practice,” says farmer Gill Sanbrook, a member of the 8 families group in the Gundagai/Holbrook area.

This is why a community of practice can be so powerful, because groups of people who share a common passion and provide mutual support learn better. Soils for Life’s long-running case study program is now focusing on groups of farmers. We recognise that rebuilding our agricultural soils and landscapes is driven from the ground up, and starts with farmers; particularly with groups of farmers.

Have you got your hands on Matthew Evans new book 'Soil' yet? Over the past few weeks, our CEO @drlizclarke hasn't been able to put it down! This month, she had a chat with Matthew, who said: “I get excited about knowing that we can make soil and rebuild soil, that we can reverse [up to a point] loss of soil health and function; we know how to do it!”. Matthew took over an abandoned farm in Tasmania where he started producing food; “I had no preconceived ideas about how to farm, I didn’t have to unlearn any assumptions about how farming should be done, I had no previous generations advising me so i was starting from scratch and asking all the basic questions.” However, now Matthew says; “Our soil is improving every year, and the food that is produced in that soil definitely tastes better,”.
